Gold Jewellery Buying Guide

The Golden Rules: There are many different types of gold used to manufacture jewellery. Understanding the difference will make your buying decision more informed and much simpler. You will be 1 step closer to buying jewellery online after you read the gold buying guide.

The most common mixture of gold used in jewellery is 14 karat (14K) which contains 14 parts of gold mixed with 10 parts of base metals. While 14K is standard for gold jewelry products, you can get anywhere from 10K to almost pure gold. Generally speaking pure gold is not used in the jewellery industry because pure gold is too soft and the jewellery won’t hold its shape over time.
Please don’t get confused with diamond carats! Carats in diamonds measure weight but when speaking about gold, Karats measure the total purity. The higher the karat in gold, the more gold that exists in the piece of jewellery and obviously the more expensive it is.

Gold Colour:

Yellow Gold Jewellery: Yellow gold can differ in colour – therefore 18K yellow gold jewellery will have a stronger yellow colour compared with 14K or 9K yellow gold jewellery

Rose Gold: Is another variation of gold which is obtained by alloying gold with other elements in various proportions. Rose gold is basically gold and copper alloy and it is used to create more of a reddish colour. Rose gold is also sometimes refereed to as pink or red gold. Rose gold was very popular in Russia in the beginning of the 19th century and also known as Russian gold.

White Gold: White gold is an alloy of gold which is made up of at least one white metal (Nickel or Palladium). The nickel alloy is strong and tough and thus is very good for constructing rings while palladium is soft and supple which makes it ideal for gold gemstone settings.
